This Wednesday afternoon we celebrated the fifth DI55ECCIONS of the 2017/18 course featuring Laura Meseguer, a designer specialized in typography. The speaker began by recalling her beginnings in the graphic sector and highlighted that, after finishing her studies, she continued her apprenticeship in the professional world. In the early 1990s, she discovered her passion for typography and founded the Type-Ø-Tones collective with Joan Barjau, Enric Jardí and José Manuel Urós. Since then, she has not stopped experimenting with typographic design taking as references Willem Sandberg, Imre Reiner, Ricard Giralt Miracle, Herb Lubalin, Tom Carnase and, above all, Oriol Miró. "Among my sources of inspiration are the posters I find in the cities I visit, the covers of books that attract my attention, the typography manuals themselves, etc.", said our guest.

As an expert in publishing, Laura spent part of her speech explaining how she redesigned the headline and logo of the Dutch newspaper "Het Parool" to give them a more powerful identity. She also made a tour of other projects she has developed throughout his prolific career. Later, she recommended to make an artistic residency to do research, acquire new techniques and put them into practice. This advice is based on her own experience, because in 2003 she studied at KABK in The Hague. There, she went into risography and carried out different projects inspired by the activist work of Sister Corita Kent, known as the Sister of design.

In the end, the speaker pointed out some trends to consider, such as responsive OpenType fonts or those types designed to communicate in a global world. "We need more and more fonts. There will always be a graphic designer who needs the typography you are about to create", Laura concluded about the future of the profession.

As usual in our cycle, all the participants ended up sharing impressions and having a drink in the Ágora. With the last conference of the course, framed in the Barcelona Design Week of BCD - Barcelona Design Center, the second season of DI55ECCIONS ends.
